IRVINE CA, LOS ANGELES, and the PACIFIC NORTHWEST: December 9 - January 13
Cappella Romana, under the direction of Alexander Lingas, is presenting several concerts in conjunction with the J. Paul Getty Museum for their exhibit, "Holy Image, Hallowed Ground: Icons from Sinai."

MOUNT SINAI: THE FRONTIER OF BYZANTIUM

Medieval Byzantine chant for St. Catherine and Christmastide from St. Catherine's Monastery, Mt. Sinai, Egypt. This program features music for the Vespers of St. Catherine in the first half, and the Play of the Three Children in the Furnace in the second. The liturgical drama in the second half was performed in the weeks leading up to Christmas in late Byzantium as part of the commemorations of Old Testament heros. The Three Children were thrown into the furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar (Nabuchodonosor) for refusing to worship his idol. They were saved and cared for by an angel, depicted as the Archangel Michael in a Sinaite icon on display in the current Getty exhibition. The concert schedules are as follows:
